The title says it all. It's the experienced sailor's maxim. There are too many variables e.g., wind direction/intensity, distance traveled, boat equipment/motor failure, etc., for definitive planning. In short, you "give it up and don't fight it" because the medium is the boss. It's different, folks--a different way of feeling--a "groove".
