Some pics on St. Patty's Day

TOO DANG COLD....still

   March 17, 2014...still

   Split from Clarko St. Pk., Quitman, Miss. & pointed the nose for Natchez, Miss. St.Pk..  Had lunch in Bude, Miss. amongst a lot of forlorn looking folks just out of church.  The countryside from Bude  to Natchez was rolling pine covered hills, an occasional big farm and church after church after church--seemingly the most prosperous business in these parts. Approaching Natchez we took a wrong turn down a dirt road with no place to turn around & shades of the movie, Deliverance-- what with all the local fellows leaning over their pickup beds and giving us the evil eye: Two seniors in an egg-shaped pod of a camper ain't something one sees down in the boonies--this, I get. Finally found a turn around spot of sorts & bogged down in the mud but managed to come about. Our Natchez camping spot last night was muddy but we met some neat folks:  a couple even older than us from Wis. who were bemoaning their return home & a second couple heading home to western N.Y. who were also a bit long faced. They'd been to Big Bend like us and were perhaps even more enamored of this 880,000 acre marvel than we are. These folks gave us a camping spot tip down on Mustang Island on the northern tip of Padre Island, Tex., on the Gulf, off- shore from Corpus Christi. Really hankering some short britches, a Tee-shirt and some shrimp. Before splitting for Mustang Island we're spending two nights at Martin Di'es St. Pk. outside of Jasper,Tex. Great spot right next to a cyprus filled lake.  All around are the tall, tall pines. We'll rest here till early Wednesday and then blast off for the Gulf. Yippeeeeee!!!!!

FDR State Park. Warm Springs Ga

Went to see Roosevelt's Little White House.  An amazing ,brave person.

Photos from FDR

Little White House & Larger Than Life Man

   Toured FDR's Little White House. Ah....what an exemplary progressive...the embodiment of the pure humanist--held America together during the darkest hours of the Depression; held us together during the darkest hours of WWII; coped with dreadful polio and always in lock step with his American brothers & sisters---be they Appalachian shanny poor or titans of Wall Street---he always searched for the good in others.
   Included, are LWH photos---a favorite of mine being the partially finished oil paint portrait underway when he died in Warm Springs at the Little White House, on April 12, 1945---only weeks before the end  of WWII which had caused him immense angst. He loathed all war but had no choice when Pearl Harbor was bombed.
   Twenty-eight degrees this AM, though a glorious day thereafter.  Hiked a bit through winter brown hardwoods---flora with its own sort of beauty, while  here and there, tall, tall, skinny pines swayed and purred in the wind. Just hooked up the EGG to the truck. Did some research and state parks on the Gulf are filled with snowbirds. Thus, we're pointing the nose more due-west to Quitman, Miss., and by sheer coincidence, the same park we stayed in en route, circuitously to Big Bend National Pk. on the Mexican border in southwest Texas. In spite of this big country, it'll be twice in the crossroads town of Quitman & maybe even three times in Cut and Shoot, Texas---that's right, twice. Is there something wrong with us and our travels. Who knows...who cares.

Humbug Hamburg

   Planned on staying night one at Hamburg St, Pk., Ga., where we'd stayed en route to Big Bend Nat. Pk. down on the Mex. Border in West Tex., but "...the best laid plans..." being what they are, Hamburg was closed due to budget cuts, so we ended up at AH Anderson St. Pk., Ga. It seems that Ole AH was the VP of the Confederacy & still held in high esteem.
   The setting was amongst huge loblolly pines with pine straw all about and the wind piping up, what with the high pressure settling in and tall, tall pines swayed with differing tempos and their green needles purred with the wind and we needed some alcohol and it was getting cold and well in to dusk so we went to the EGG, stepped inside, closed the hatch and turned on the heater. All night the pines purred. Ann said it sounded like a gentle ocean surf at night. I agreed.
                        +++++++

3/13/14--day 2
   Burrr.....This AM it was 32 and our little heater wasn't up to the task so we wore jackets, stayed in bed and drank hot tea. Then the stark edge of the morning sun sun came through the east windows and helped the heater along the heater and we had oatmeal with raisins, bacon, eggs and more tea then packed up the H20 hose the elec. hookup and got underway.  We're just now in Warm Springs, Ga., at FDR St. Park. More later.  I'm outside at a concrete picnic table, it's 6PM, the sun is slipping behind the the ridge and I'm shivering, so it off to the EGG.....
